Why the Change?Common Core state standards require students use digital tools beginning in grade 2 and students in grades 4 & 5 are expected to type a 1-2 page paper! Thus, keyboarding and technology classes are needed well before high school.
In addition, PARCC assessments will be given beginning at Grade 3. These tests will be administered on computers using a combination of constructed response items, performance-based tasks, and computer-enhanced, computer-scored items. Meaning--our students must be comfortable using technology to complete the tests. Standards of Assurance have NOT changed, but schools may choose to implement the new courses and move keyboarding down to better prepare their students. In order to do this, your school must have submitted a transition plan to the Arkansas Department of Career Education. |
Who can Teach the New Courses?Keyboarding may be taught below grade 5 by a licensed teacher. The local district determines proficiency and course requirements. Keyboarding is required before students can take further technology/business courses in grade 5 and above.
Input Technologies (grade 5) and Technology Communications (grade 6) must be taught by a licensed business teacher OR a licensed teacher with the 419 Endorsement. The 419 Endorsement can be acquired by attending the ACE-approved 3-day professional development. Courses in grades 5 and 6 require forty minutes per week or its equivalent during the school year. They may be taught as separate courses or embedded into the general classroom if the classroom teacher holds licensure for the course. New!
